Travel Health

Identify your travel health risks before you take off.

Cost:  $225

This service can be purchased on its own or added to your Comprehensive Health Assessment.

The benefit of coming to Medcan's Travel Clinic is our physician expertise and oversight, which means a greater likelihood of healthy and safe travels for our clients.

Our Travel Clinic is led by Global Infectious Disease Specialist, Dr. Kevin Kain, and each physician on our team has a specialty in travel medicine. Your Medcan travel appointment will include a 30-minute consultation with a physician who will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Identify travel immunizations recommended for your travel destination(s)
  • Provide necessary prescriptions
  • Provide a country specific health information package
  • Oversee the nurse administering your vaccinations

We can help prepare you for the following:

  • Infectious diseases transmitted via insects: Malaria, yellow fever, dengue virus, japanese encephalitis, tick fever and others
  • Food and Water Contaminants: parasites, bacteria, schistosomiasis, typhoid fever, cholera and others
  • Human Exposure: Tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis, meningococcus and others
  • Environmental Hazards: altitude sickness, air travel, jet lag and others
  • Animal and Fish Borne Illnesses: Rabies, foot and mouth disease, ciguatera poisoning, tropical skin conditions and others

Immunizations and follow-up boosters

Immunizations are strongly recommended for many parts of Africa and South America, as well as several Caribbean islands. For travelers requiring yellow fever or Japanese encephalitis immunizations we recommend having a travel clinic consultation 6 weeks prior to the trip.

Travel medication advice

Our Travel Health team can offer advice with regards to the necessary anti-nausea/diarrhea, insect repellants and travel kits required for most destinations. A Travel Health Clinic consultation 10 days prior to departure is optimal. If you can’t make it 10 days prior to your trip it is still beneficial to have a travel consultation.

Medcan Medical Director Dr. James Aw's Top 10 Travel Tips

  1. Always consult with a travel medicine expert before an international trip.
  2. Take precautions against insects. Take antimalarial pills, wear protective clothing and use insect repellant.
  3. Be prepared to purify your own supply of drinking water if bottled or boiled beverages are not available.
  4. Watch what you eat. Avoid raw or uncooked foods and unpasteurized dairy products. The rule of thumb is "boil it, peel it, cook it, or forget it!"
  5. Carry medication for traveler's diarrhea.
  6. Avoid HIV/AIDS. Practice abstinence or safe sex.
  7. Avoid parasites. Don't swim, bathe or wade in fresh water.
  8. Adapt to your new environment. Drink adequate fluids, consume extra dietary salt, wear loose fitting, light-coloured clothing and apply sunscreen. Reduce jet-lag. Increase fluid intake, avoid excessive alcohol consumption and adapt sleep patterns to local time as soon as possible.
  9. Obtain a traveler's medical kit appropriate for your destination, length of trip and general health. These kits are available at travel clinics, or may be prepared by your own doctor.
  10. Protect yourself from accidental injury related to motor vehicle transportation and be concerned about your security - avoid unsafe areas.
