Omega Score Risk Assessment

This service does not need to be purchased in conjunction with a Comprehensive Health Assessment.

Large epidemiological studies and randomized controlled trials have clearly demonstrated that higher blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids are linked with significant protection from developing coronary heart disease, suffering a heart attack, sudden cardiac death, and death from coronary heart disease.

Working closely with scientists from Nutrasource Diagnostics Inc. at the University of Guelph Research Park, Medcan offers the opportunity to have your blood omega-3 fatty acid level measured and receive a score based on your results.

Cost:  $295*

This evidence-based, state-of-the-art risk assessment program provides you with:

  • Your current omega-3 fatty acid blood level and subsequent risk for heart disease, fatal heart attack, and sudden cardiac death.
  • Targeted dietary and supplementation advice to improve omega-3 fatty acid blood level and overall heart health.
  • The opportunity to have a post-treatment Omega Score blood test (after 6 weeks) to ensure your blood omega-3 fatty acids have increased to the desired level.

How the Omega Score Risk Assessment Works:

  • Initial appointment with Medcan’s lab technician for your Omega Score blood test. This can be done during your Comprehensive Health Assessment or at any other time that’s convenient for you. No fasting is required.
  • A 30-minute appointment with a dietitian (three weeks after your Omega Score blood test), to review your results and what they mean for your heart health, and to receive a treatment plan of dietary modification and/or supplementation to improve your omega-3 blood level.

A post-treatment blood test is recommended for individuals whose Omega Scores place them at moderate to high risk for heart disease or a cardiac event. This second blood test will measure your improvements after implementing dietary and/or supplement advice from Medcan’s registered dietitian. Cost for an additional Omega Score blood test is $195 (includes a 15-minute consultation with your dietitian).

*An individual receipt for insurance reimbursement purposes will be issued for each nutrition counselling session.
