Client Education Event: The Newest Developments in Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Screening
On March 6th over 60 Medcan Clinic clients and guests listened to world renowned Chief of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Dr. Patrick Okolo from The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Okolo outlined the newest developments in colorectal cancer prevention and screening. Medcan's nutritionist Leslie Beck, RD provided the audience with some important nutrition and dietary tips for preventing colorectal cancer.
This event was the sixth of seven Clinic Education events that Medcan Clinic has hosted for its clients to celebrate Medcan's 20th anniversary. Dr. Okolo's lecture was among several such events organized in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine International (JHI).
Medcan and JHI have entered into an agreement to facilitate timely access for Canadian patients who wish to seek medical care from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Okolo discussed a range of colorectal cancer screening technologies, such as Fecal Occult Blood Testing (FOBT), Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, FOBT & Sigmoidoscopy, Barium Enema and Colonoscopy. He also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of emerging screening technologies, such as Computer Tomographic (CT) Colonoscopy, Immunochemical FOBT, Fecal DNA and Video Capsule Colonoscopy
Leslie Beck, RD explained that in addition to high-fiber diets, increasing intake of folate-rich foods such as spinach, lentils and asparagus, consuming adequate vitamin D, and limiting alcohol intake can also help lower the risk for colorectal cancer.
