Client Education Event: The Latest in Prostate Cancer Screening, Prevention, and Treatment
On November 18th over 100 Medcan Clinic clients and guests listened to Director, Urologic Oncology Fellowship Dr. Mark Gonzalgo from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Gonzalgo outlined the newest developments in prostate cancer prevention and screening. Medcan's Director of Nutrition, Leslie Beck, RD provided the audience with some important nutrition tips for preventing prostate cancer.
Dr. Gonzalgo discussed the evolution of three surgical technologies including Radical Retropubic, Laparoscopic, and Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy. He also discussed clinical practice guidelines for Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screening. PSA testing has led to an increase in detection of prostate cancer that is more likely to be organ confined.
Leslie Beck, RD discussed nutrition and diet strategies to help reduce risk such as increasing your intake of selenium rich foods, (brazil nuts, seafood, tuna, poultry, garlic, onions, and mushrooms) and including more lycopene in your diet (found in tomatoes). Losing excess weight can also guard against prostate cancer.
