William Bateman, MD, Dip Aviation Medicine
Senior Medical ConsultantDr. Bateman is a medical graduate of Queen’s University, and diplomate in Aviation Medicine from the RAF School of Aviation Medicine in the United Kingdom. He specializes in military, aerospace, and diving medicine and is a Canadian Forces Flight Surgeon and Advanced Diving Medical Officer, as well as being a certified SCUBA diver and commercial pilot. He served as a Medical Officer in the Canadian Forces (1980-2000, retiring at the rank of Commander) and currently works as a consultant in aerospace and diving medicine at Defence Research and Development Canada (Toronto). His roles there involve teaching, research coverage, and consulting on medical issues of aircrew and divers – including development of practice guidelines and prevention programs in these populations. Dr. Bateman practiced Emergency Medicine for 25 years prior to joining Medcan in 2008, having worked shifts in the University Health Network (Toronto), University Hospital (London & Woodstock General Hospital Sites), West Parry Sound Health Centre, as well as the Niagara Health System and Grand River/St. Mary’s Hospital (Kitchener). He also holds privileges at Humber River Regional Hospital in Toronto both in the Emergency Department and as an on-call surgical assistant. Dr. Bateman has instructed Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) since 1988 and continues teaching these courses several times per year. He also lectures extensively in his other areas of specialty (including in the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto 2000-2005), and has published numerous medical journal articles. Dr. Bateman’s other pursuits include consulting in clinical hyperbarics at The Judy Dan Wound Care Centre at the former Branson Hospital in Toronto, a research center aimed at clarifying the role of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in diabetic limb salvage (among other indications for HBOT).
