Michael Hawkes, MD, FRCPC, DTMH

Dr. Hawkes acquired his MD and fellowship specialty training in pediatrics (FRCPC) from the University of Alberta and in Infectious Diseases (FRCPC) from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He was Chief Resident, Division of Infectious Diseases at the Hospital for Sick Children and received the highest academic standing in his undergraduate medical class (Louise McKinney Scholarship, University of Alberta). He also has an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering (B.Eng). Dr. Hawkes completed subspecialty training in tropical medicine (Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene - Gorgas Clinical Tropical Medicine) with the University of Alabama and Universidad Cayetano Heridia in Peru and has published several articles in his areas of research interests. He is currently pursuing his PhD, Institute Medical Sciences, University of Toronto in the area of infectious diseases (malaria, tuberculosis, tropical medicine). Dr. Hawkes has presented at national and international medical conferences and has field medical/research experience in Africa, South America and Asia. He has received multiple awards during his academic career including the CIHR Clinician Scientist Award (2006), Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Award (2006) and Harry Weinlos Humanitarian Prize (2001). He remains active clinically as a pediatrician clinical consultant at William Osler Health Centre and community based clinics. Dr. Hawkes has research and clinical interests in travel and tropical medicine.
