What’s new at Medcan: Belkyra

Enhance your chin contour without surgery

For those who are unhappy with the appearance of their jaw line – chin up, a new contouring treatment provides an option.

A new non-surgical injectable targets the resistant under-chin area where the unwelcome appearance of fullness has developed. In less than an hour, the procedure can reduce that appearance, with little to no down time.

It’s called Belkyra, and it’s a Health Canada approved treatment to reduce the fat layer in the chin, helping redefine the jaw line.  The active ingredient in Belkyra is deoxycholic acid, a synthetic form of a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.

“I love this procedure and my patients love this procedure because it’s quick, in office and has incredible results,” says Dr. Julia Carroll, Director, Dermatology at Medcan. “It’s also gradual, which my patients really like. They notice the improvement but friends and family aren’t able to pinpoint exactly what has changed.  Also, the results are permanent.”

What’s involved

Clients will have an initial consultation to ensure Belkyra is right for their needs. For the procedure, the dermatologist injects the targeted area with a very small needle.  The entire appointment takes around 30 minutes.  The appearance of the jaw line will gradually improve with each treatment session. Clients generally require 2 to 4 sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Up to 6 treatments may be administered. Once goals are achieved, re-treatment is not expected.

What to expect

You can return to normal activities after the procedure, though there are some temporary side effects. Some patients experience bruising or swelling that may last for a few days, and numbness in the overlying skin.  Some people like to bring a scarf to wear after the treatment or schedule sessions near the end of the week to allow for solitary recovery.
