Bone Mineral Density Screening
A Bone mineral density (BMD) screening is also known as densitometry,
and is done using a technique called dual energy x-ray absorptiometry.
The BMD test works by measuring a specific bone or bones, usually the spine, hip, and femur (leg). The density of these bones is then compared with an average index based on age, sex and size to determine your individual risk. BMD screening is done on women over 65, or earlier on individuals with specific risk factors.
You will be asked to lie on your back on a comfortable padded table. You may also be asked to remove any metal objects that interfere with the x-ray images. The test will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
