Medcan Studies Genetic Risk for Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in men, with an estimate prevalence of 1 in 6. A number of factors can increase risk for prostate cancer, including age, ethnicity and family history. Personal Genome Testing can be used to determine an individual's genetic risk for the disease, however prostate cancer is a complex condition with multiple genetic predisposing factors. A number of Medcan clinicians, including Jill Davies, Director of Genetics, Dr. Lea Velsher, physician consultant in Genetics, and Dr. Rajiv Singal, Director of Urology, are involved in an ongoing study to more thoroughly investigate the genetic markers related to prostate cancer in order to get a better understanding of their effect on the risk and severity of the disease.
