Medcan Donates to “Canadian Food for Children”
By, Laura Byers, RN
In July 2010, a new legislation came into effect in Ontario, mandating all health-care facilities to use safety-engineered needles. This meant that clinics all around Ontario, including Medcan had a plethora of needles, phlebotomy supplies, and IV kits that were sterile and completely functional but that could no longer be used in clinics.
Fortunately our Medcan staff found an organization that was able to use all the equipment that were no longer up to code in our clinic. The supplies were donated to an organization called “Canadian Food for Children”.
Through “Canadian Food for Children”, some supplies were sent to Guatemala where they were distributed to a clinic and children’s hospital for the poor. The remaining supplies were sent to a small rural hospital in Ludzi, Malawi.
“Canadian Food for Children” is a volunteer group whose mandate is to raise funds, purchase food, and gather goods for the hungry in developing countries. Every person that is part of this organization is a volunteer and one hundred per cent of a private individual's donation is used to buy food and to pay for shipping costs.
Medcan will continue to donate any supplies we no longer can put to use to this organization.
